New Zealand were unbeaten after the first day’s action at the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series in Dubai

After a thrilling day’s action at 7he Sevens Stadium in Dubai, eight teams have progressed to the cup knockout stages.

Brazil, who will host a round of the Women’s Sevens World Series in February next, play the current champions New Zealand in the first quarter final in Dubai on the main pitch on Friday.

Australia, who were impressive in their three pool games today, finished in second place and will play England in the knockout stages.

Third seeds Russia ended day one with an strong victory over England in the pool stages, and will face the United States in their quarter final.

The other quarter final will be played between Spain and Canada on pitch one on Friday afternoon.

With proof that the women’s Game is becoming even more competitive, there were four draws during Thursday’s exciting action at 7he Sevens Stadium in the United Arab Emirates.

World Series and Rugby World Cup Sevens champions New Zealand beat Fiji, Ireland and the United States to cement their spot as best seed.

For Brazil, who finished the pool stages with 6 points following a win, a loss and a draw, it was a day to savour after edging into the quarter final stages.

All the action was streamed live from Pitch One of 7he Sevens Stadium on Thursday, and the women’s action from the main pitch will be available to view again on Friday, by clicking po.st/WSWSLive

“As we expected, the quality of Rugby on display here in Dubai today was excellent” said IRB Head of Competitions and Performance Mark Egan.

“We’ve never before had four drawn matches in any IRB Sevens competition. This goes to show just how competitive and tough the Women’s Sevens Series has become, and it’s only in it’s second year.”

“Tomorrow’s matches, which tie in with the men’s event, look set to be close encounters and I have no doubt we’ll see some great Rugby on display again.”

Meanwhile, Fiji, who finished in 9th place will face Tunisia in the bowl semi-final, while Ireland who finished in 10th position play France in the other bowl semi-final on pitch 2 in Dubai.

All the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series action from 7he Sevens Stadium gets underway on Friday morning at 11.40am (GMT +4)
