Coaching staff consisting of Lynn Howells, Marius Tincu and Rob Moffat has established a group of 36 players for the first two games of the competition. 24 forwards and 12 backs.

“Romania starts out with one thought, which is to qualify for the World Cup 2019, which is the most important objective of both players and staff, and the whole romanian players group. At the same time, with the changing format of the competition Rugby Championship Europe, we want to win this edition and win “it”, when I say this, thinking of winning the last match at home against Georgia. To reach this goal, we shall make any misstep, treat every game like a final and we must focus on what we must do. We know that the first two matches will be harder because players will come together after a period of two months’ break and will need less time to accommodate between them on the field, but we hope that experience and maturity will help. ” said coach Lynn Howells.

LELOS ON THE WAY TO DEFEND THEIR EUROPEAN TITLE

The team will stay in Toulouse until February 9th and then travel to Brussels, to play against the Belgium on February 11th.The team will come back home on February 13 and camp at Shevardeni National High Performance to prepare for the match against Germany. Match Scheduled for February 19th at Rustavi Rugby Stadium.
As Georgia secured its place for the next Rugby World Cup 2019 early on, the Lelos coaching staff will take benefit of Rugby Europe Championship 2017 to testing young players and build a solid group for 2019.
Milton Haig declared :“Our objectives will obviously be to win Rugby Europe Championship. On top of that our other objectives will be to continue to build depth in positions and give young players an opportunity to prove to coaches they are good enough for future selections. Its also important during this competition to develop our style and consistency of our play and continue to innovate our ability to play different styles of attack and defense”.
The selection of 31-man squad for the first two REC 2017 matches includes 8 uncapped players. If all these players enter the pitch vs Belgium and Germany, the all-time ranks of The Lelos will increase till 249.
“We have selected some younger players for the first 2 matches and this is a good chance for them to show selectors their skills. As we look towards the 2019 World Cup in Japan, some of these players will be involved so their selection is the start of this process. However its important for these players to realize that we are watching everything they do on and off the field. Their commitment and professionalism will be under the microscope so this will be interesting for the Coaches to see” Commented Haig about young players called to squad.
15 players from Georgia’s November 2016 squad will not play the starting matches of Rugby Europe Championship this year.
It should also be noted that this experimental squad still includes experienced leaders: Kvirikashvili, Kacharava, Malaguradze, Begadze and Nemsadze.

2017 REIC – RUGBY EUROPE CHAMPIONSHIP
SPAIN 0 – 0 RUSSIA
First challenge for Spain in Championship
For its first game in Rugby Europe Championship 2017, Spain will have a huge challenge facing the Russian, which finished at the third place just before Leones last season.
A great clash between the teams looking ahead to a possible qualification for 2019.
A victory of Spain would motivate players before moving to Romania and hosting Georgia, full of hopes and ambition.
A victory of Russia would be a good start before playing Belgium in Brussels and hosting Romania.
In any case, the last season opposition played in Sotchi was a tough game, ending with a short victory of Russia (22-20).

Stefan begins exciting journey with Cyprus
The Scrum February 8, 2017
SCRUM Web Editor catches up with a BT Premiership player on the cusp of an international cap:
Stirling County’s Stefan Yarrow is heading off to Cyprus this week to begin his international rugby journey.
The 24-year-old’s father’s family are Cypriot and he has been given the chance to train with the national team in the coming days and then hopes to be involved in their match away to Andorra on Saturday. Explaining how it all came about Stefan, who has been playing in County’s first team this term, said: “My club team mate Struan Robertson follows Cyprus Rugby on Twitter and they tweeted a message out asking anyone who is eligible to play for Cyprus to contact them, so that’s what I did.
“A couple of weeks later I got a call from Andrew Binikos, who is part of the management team, and it just went from there.
“We travel to Barcelona on February 8 for a couple days training camp and then we head to Andorra to play them on Saturday. My family are super proud, My mum, dad, uncle, cousins, grandma and grandpa are heading across to Andorra to come and support me. My mum has even made hats in the Cyprus colours for Saturday for my travelling support.”
“This call-up is the highlight of my career, no way did I ever think starting rugby in P4 that I would ever get an internationalist call up for any sport. I started rugby with the minis at Stirling County because all my best mates – Blair Gilchrist, Craig Robertson and Finn Russell – used to go on about how fun it was so I thought I’d give it a go. I liked it ahead of other sports because you could get stuck in which I was right into.”
Stefan played for County all through the youth age-grades and also played rugby at Wallace High School.
He has been in and around the County senior teams since then and the electrician for FES said: “My first XV debut was around three years back on a rainy, cold and snowy day at Old Anniesland against Glasgow Hawks were I came off the bench. County really is a great club. The group of lads that are here make it for me if I’m being honest. We’re all really close so makes everything a lot easier be it training or game day.”
“Also we all know what is expected from us from coaches so when words need to be said nobody takes offence as we’re all mates at the end of the day.”
Stefan started off as a scrum-half when he was young – “I have played pretty much every position apart from 10 and front row” – but has now settled in the second-row.
And having watched pal Finn go on and play regularly at international level he is excited to try and follow in his footsteps.
“Finn’s my best mate so I’m in contact with him all the time pretty much. It has been great to watch his career,” Stefan explained.
“My aims for the next few months are to stay fit for the remainder of the season and continue playing as much as I can for Stirling.
“The next Cyprus game is in Cyprus so the family who still stay across there will hopefully get a chance to come watch me play if I get selected, so fingers crossed.”
