Germany’s shock 41-38 win over Romania stole the headlines on the opening weekend of the 2017 Rugby Europe Championship.

Raynor Parkinson kicked 16 points as Germany scored five tries in Offenbach, with two of those scores coming from blindside flanker Jacobus Otto. This was the first time Germany have defeated Romania in 70 years and Marcel Coetzee’s late score proved to be the winner, sparking jubilant scenes.

“This win over Romania is crazy, historic,” Germany’s captain Sean Armstrong told AFP.

“We were behind at half-time and fought our way back.”

There were no slip-ups for Georgia who won comfortably against Belgium at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, with the final score reading 31-8.

Giorgi Tkhilaishvili, Giorgi Koshadze and Beka Gorgadze all scored for the Lelos, who also notched up a penalty try.

Merak Kvirkashvili and Lasha Malaguradze shared the kicking duties as Georgia moved into top spot thanks to their bonus-point win. Next for them is a home game against Germany in Rustavi.

Finally this weekend at Madrid’s Estadio Nacional Complutense it was Spain who got off to a winning start thanks to their 16-6 win over Russia.

Spain were always ahead in the capital thanks to opening up an early 10-0 lead through Mathieu Belie’s converted try and a Richard Linklater penalty.

Linklater and Russia’s Iiuri Kushnarev traded penalties to make it 13-6 to Spain at half-time, with the only points of the second half coming through Linklater’s third three-pointer.
