Hawke’s Bay rout Manawatu in pre-season

15/08/2012
Hawke’s Bay made no race of the pre-competition rugby match against Manawatu winning 37-13 at Napier today.

The Magpies made most of the running throughout, scoring four tries to just a solitary try by Manawatu captain Nick Crosswell 11 minutes from the start.

The game started ominously for the Manawatu Turbos when All Black wing Zac Guildford scored in the first minute after Manawatu failed to cover his grubber kick.

Hawke’s Bay were too strong in the scrums and that put Manawatu on the back foot. They Magpies through first-five Dan Waenga  also kicked well, fullback Gillies Kaka scoring off one kick.

Hooker Ash Dixon roared through a huge gap to score in the second spell and Ihaia West got his near the end when a kick was charged down.

Manawatu start their ITM Cup campaign against Wellington at Palmerston North on Friday, August 24 but have plenty of work to do before that.

Hawke’s Bay 37 (Zac Guildford, Gillies Kaka, Ash Dixon, Ihaia West, tries; Dan Waenga 3 pen, 3 con; West con)

Manawatu 13 (Nick Crosswell try; Nathan George con, 2 pen) HT 20-10.
