Smith named MVP

smith1TOKYO (Jan. 28) – Suntory Sungoliath flanker George Smith was named the Japan Rugby Top League’s Most Valuable Player on Monday, a day after helping his club win their third league title.The former Wallaby, in his second season in Japan, became the first player to win back to back MVP awards.

Panasonic Wild Knights wing Akihito Yamada picked up the award for top try scorer after touching down a record 20 times in the regular season, while Ayumu Goromaru was named the top points scorer and top kicker. The Yamaha Jubilo fullback finished the season with 160 points, courtesy of 1 try, 40 conversions and 25 penalty goals.

Toyota Verblitz prop Kohei Yoshida was named Rookie of the Year.

Smith, Yamada and Goromaru were all named in the league’s Top XV.
