Norway Rues Missed Penalties as Luxembourg Edges Oslo Showdown

Norway came within one kick of securing a second win in a row last weekend after battling hard against a resilient Luxembourg side at Bislett Stadion in Oslo.

Unfortunately the kick from winger Kristoffer Borsheim drifted left of the posts, leaving Norway to rue their missed chances as Luxembourg clung on to win the game 9-7.

Norway started the game confidently, having deservedly beaten Finland 24-12 away in Turku the previous weekend with a determined performance marked by solid defence from the forwards and inspired running from the backs.

Against Luxembourg, the home side worked hard in defence early on to resist a series of attacks from Luxembourg side which rarely threatened the Norwegian try line at any point in the game.

However the away side was the first to get on the scoreboard, taking advantage of some ill-discipline from Norway’s forward-pack to build a 6-0 lead with two well-taken penalties from fly-half Ciaran Keane.

Norway responded decisively, building a series of attacks before captain Robert Gannon threw a dummy and scored a deserved try under the posts just before half time.

However a combination of indiscipline and a failure to make the most of their chances meant Norway struggled to build on a well-worked try after the break.

A resurgent home side was once-again boosted by a strong substitutes bench which helped raise the pace of the game as a tiring Norway sought to extend their lead.

But once again Luxembourg responded, fly-half Keane kicking the away side back into the lead after another Norwegian infringement at the breakdown.

But despite some determined running from Norway’s back line as the final whistle approached, the home side failed to add any more points and Luxembourg clung-on for a deserved win.

Norway, sitting second on the table of the European Nations Cup group 2D, will now take a deserved break from the playing field before taking on Bosnia & Herzegovina in April and then Greece at home in May.
