Paul Treu Named Kenya Sevens Head Coach

Former South African coach Paul Treu has been confirmed as the new Head Coach of Kenya Rugby Sevens team for the next 3 years until 2016.

Treu will be assisted on the technical bench by Vuyo Zangqa (attack coach), Graham Bentz (strength and conditioning, sports science) and Dr.Karen Schwabe (sports medicine).

Treu’s team will also have Felix Ochieng’ as assistant coach, Humphrey Kayange (player/coach), Lamech Bongeri (physiotherapist) and Steve Sewe (team manager).

Kenya Rugby Union chairman Mwangi Muthee said the training programme for the rugby team resumes on 1 November and all South African assistants will be in Nairobi by then.

Upon the Kenya Sevens team qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games, some members of Treu’ SA technical team, for example attack coach Zangqa, will receive $250,000 (Sh21m) net.

If the team wins a Bronze medal, Zangqa will get $50,000 (Sh4.5m) but if it wins a Silver medal, then he will get $100,000 (Sh8.5m).

If the team wins the ultimate prize of gold, then he would go home with $250,000 (Sh21m).

The rest of the teams’ bonuses will be negotiated through the sponsors and the government of Kenya.

KRU is taking an insurance policy to cover for the bonuses.

These bonuses will be paid not less than seven days after the team attains those achievements.
