{"id":39381,"date":"2020-09-01T20:02:05","date_gmt":"2020-09-01T08:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rugbyredefined.com\/wp\/?p=39381"},"modified":"2020-09-01T23:49:16","modified_gmt":"2020-09-01T11:49:16","slug":"olympic-sevens-preparations-continue-as-2021-hsbc-new-zealand-sevens-called-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rugbyredefined.com\/wp\/hsbc-sevens-world-series\/2020\/09\/olympic-sevens-preparations-continue-as-2021-hsbc-new-zealand-sevens-called-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympic Sevens preparations continue as 2021 HSBC New Zealand Sevens called off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Olympic Sevens preparations continue as 2021 HSBC New Zealand Sevens called off<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>All Blacks and Black Ferns Sevens remain focused on Olympic build up<\/li>\n<li>World Rugby working on abbreviated 2021 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series<\/li>\n<li>Planning underway for Oceania invitational sevens tournament in early 2021<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has reaffirmed its commitment to the All Blacks and Black Ferns Sevens Tokyo Olympic Games preparations after organizers made the decision to call off the 2021 HSBC New Zealand Sevens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>World Rugby announced today the New Zealand and Australian legs of the 2021 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series will not be played due to the continued global uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">NZR General Manager Professional Rugby &amp; Performance Chris Lendrum said it was disappointing for the teams, fans, and event partners, but a sensible decision under current circumstances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had three great years in Hamilton and were planning to take the tournament back to FMG Stadium Waikato again next January, but we understand and support the decision to cancel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">The Hamilton and Sydney rounds of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2021 had been provisionally scheduled for 23-24 and 30-31 January 2021 respectively. NZR\u2019s four-year licence to host a World Series tournament remains in place through to 2023.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">HSBC New Zealand Sevens co-promoter and 37 South Managing Director Dallas Fisher said Hamilton and the Waikato region should be proud of what had been achieved over the past three years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe event has generated significant financial benefits for the region and been an immense source of pride for the city. Fans have embraced the event and we will be ready and willing to do it all again in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">The All Blacks and Black Ferns Sevens teams&#8217; schedules had been disrupted, but Lendrum said contingency plans were well advanced to ensure both teams were well prepared for the Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe goal of our sevens teams to succeed at the Olympics hasn\u2019t changed and our high-performance team have done a great job ensuring the players remain fit, focused and informed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">Most of NZR\u2019s contracted Sevens players would be involved in the Farah Palmer Cup and Mitre 10 Cup respectively.
