Namibia: NRU Reverts to ‘Plan B’

A LACK of funds has grounded Namibia’s 2013 Vodacom Cup ambitions, but alternative arrangements are being made to ensure the national side gets a regular workout in the coming months, NRU CEO Sybrand de Beer said yesterday.

De Beer said they had informed the South African Rugby Union (Saru) in mid-December that Namibia would be unable to accept its invitation to the annual competition due to resource constraints.

In order to be competitive and not just participate, the Nambiba needed at least N$3,9 million to be able to take their place in the Vodacom Cup.

The tournament has provided Namibia’s amateurs with regular action over the years and makes up for the country’s failure to attract regular test matches.

Namibia is now expected to play a friendly game against the Golden Lions from South Africa on February 23 while another match against Carlton League team Oostelikes is set for March 2.

“We’ve also sent out invitations for test matches to other African countries and are awaiting feedback. We expect to get some positive responses,” De Beer said.

“The best preparation is regular playing time. We want to ensure that the guys get plenty of that before the CAR 1B tournament in July.”

De Beer added that he would lead an NRU delegation to the High Performance Centre in Stellenbosch for an administrative seminar this weekend.

The NRU officials hope to meet with Saru representatives at the event.
