Kenya: Nation to Host Sevens Rugby Tournament

manchettehautengKenya will host the Confederation of African (CAR) Sevens rugby tournament in Mombasa in April, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) acting chief executive officer, Jack Okoth has announced.

Okoth said Kenya will be represented by second tier side–Shujaa– and not the main Kenya Sevens team. Other Kenyan squad for the two day event will be drawn from Nairobi, Nyanza, Rift Valley, Western, Nyanza and Coast.

The foreign teams expected include Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda and Namibia among others. Okoth said they expect more confirmations by next month.

He said they expect the provincial sides to be competitive during the event. ” What we want in the long run is for the provincial sides to act as a feeder programme for the main Sevens squad,” he added.

“We know there is talent in the country in terms of the sport and we have taken the step to include the provincial sides in a bid to tap the talent pool in the country.”

He noted that the Kenya Sevens coaches will be keeping close in a bid to identify the players needed for the provincial sides ahead of the tournament.

“We have asked the Sevens coaches to try and identify the players who will be required for the provincial tournament,” added Okoth. He said they also expect competition for places in the Shujaa squad to be stiff.

“Competition for places will be very stiff as the talent pools is immense. Each player will want to prove they are good to play for the team,” he added.

Elsewhere, Kenya is among of the 28 countries lined up for the expanded version of this year’s Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. The event to be hosted by the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) will be held on March 22-24.

Other African countries expected are– Tunisia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Rwanda will also be in Hong Kong to compete in a parallel tournament.

For the first time in the 38-year history of the Hong Kong Sevens, 28 teams instead of the usual 24 will take part.
